Rendering
In design, rendering on paper refers to the process of adding depth, texture, and shadow to a sketch or drawing to make the objects in it look more realistic and three-dimensional. By mastering rendering techniques, designers can create drawings that are not only clear and informative but also visually appealing and engaging.
Techniques
Shading: Create variations in tone to show where the light is hitting the object and where the shadows are. Techniques like hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling are all used to create smooth or textured shadows.
Value: This refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. By using a range of values in your drawing, you can create a sense of depth and dimension.
Highlighting: Adding highlights with a white pencil or by leaving the paper white in specific areas can show where the light is reflecting off the object.
Tips
Tips for rendering with Copic (alcohol-based) markers
Choose a marker with a light hue.
Use some scrap paper under your drawing.
Use Copic markers first. Trace drawing with a pen after.
Everything, including dimensions and the legend in the bottom right corner, needs to be traced with pen.
