2026-27 theme: TBC | Suggestions welcome
This Design unit examines products in a more detailed way and looks at the bigger picture of the design world.
As responsible designers, we must design products that are sustainable, produced ethically, and add value throughout their lifecycle
Our goal is to inquire into a textile product, test and evaluate it before repurposing its materials.
We will evaluate the product by looking at it's material, construction, and production. This evaluation will be conducted by testing samples of the material in various destructive and non-destructive testing scenarios.

Statement
of inquiry:
"Buy less, choose well, make it last" -Vivienne Westwood
Evaluating and inquiring into the global footprint of products enables greater sustainability in redesign
Gathering - Select diverse, relevant resources using a variety of techniques and strategies.
Transferring - Develop understandings across different subjects and contexts.
Focus exploration:
Markets, Commodities & Commercialisation
Human Impact on the Environment
In this unit, you are asked to disassemble and test a product. Your goal is to create material samples for testing and design appropriate testing methods to analyse the material and product itself.
We will use sections D and A of the Design Cycle to evaluate and analyse the product. Our lens for this analysis is material suitability and sustainability.
We will then create a new textiles product from the sample materials to model sustainability in action.
Success criteria:
Your project will be successful if;
Your testing and analysis inform others about the sustainability aspect of design.
Your process inspires thoughtful consumption, design, and production.
Your repurposed product functions and continues the useful life of the material.
Initial inquiry:
What materials and processes are used in textile design?
What are the effects of fashion on the environment?
What does sustainable design in fashion look like?
What are material properties?
How can we authentically test materials?
Demonstrate your understanding and document the outcomes of your project:
D: Testing & Evaluation:
Di: Testing
Design detailed and relevant testing methods, which generate data, to measure the success of the solution.
Dii: Evaluation
Critically evaluate the success of the solution against the design specification based on authentic product testing.
Diii: Improvements
Explain how the solution could be improved.
Div: Impact
Explain the impact of the product on the client/target audience.
A: Inquiry & Analysis:
Ai: Design problem
Explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem for a client/ target audience.
Aii: Research
Construct a research plan, which identifies & prioritizes the primary & secondary research needed to develop a solution.
Aiii: Existing products analysis
Analyze a range of existing products that inspire a solution to the problem
Aiv: Design Brief
Develop a design brief, that summarizes the analysis of relevant research.
Clarification of deliverables and instructions for each section is included in the Google doc.
