2028-29 theme: TBC | Suggestions welcome
In this Design unit we examine existing products in a more detailed way and look at the bigger picture of the design world.
As responsible designers, we must design products that are sustainable, produced ethically, and add value throughout their lifecycle
In this unit, you are asked to disassemble a product. Your goal is to break down the product into it's most basic parts so they can be analysed.
Once disassembled we will use sections D and A of the Design Cycle to evaluate and analyse the product. Our lens for this analysis is sustainability.
We will then create a display piece of each product to help others understand how their everyday products are made.
Statement
of inquiry:
"Morality, like art, means drawing a line someplace."
- Oscar Wilde
More ethical design choices can be influenced by more informed choices by target markets
Evaluating -
Evaluate the reliability of a variety of relevant resources. Critically assess bias and limitations.
Focus exploration:
Human impact on the environment
Success criteria:
Your product will be successful if;
Your product display and report inform others about the sustainability, ethics, and repairability aspects of product design.
You create an interesting, aesthetically pleasing display that draws the audience's attention to the wider issues.
Initial inquiry:
What are 'design for disassembly' and 'planned obsolescence '?
What are unethical practices?
What is modern slavery?
What are the social and economic implications of a product's design and production?
DP Extension:
Many of the themes in this unit relate to Topics 2,4,5,8,&10 of the DP Design Tech syllabus
Demonstrate your understanding and document the outcomes of your project:
D: Evaluation
Di: Testing methods
Design suitable testing methods to evaluate the product
Dii: Evaluation
Evaluates the product against chosen criteria
Diii: Evaluation
Describes how the product could be improved
Div: Impact
Explains how the product impacts others and the environment
A: Inquiry & Analysis
Ai: Problem
Explains and justifies the need for solutions to the problems with the product
Aii: Research
Develop a research plan to fuel the inquiry
Aiii: Existing products analysis
Analyze a range of existing products that inspire solutions to the problems.
Aiv: Design Brief
Develops a detailed summary of the analysis of rthe product.
Clarification of deliverables and instructions for each section is included in the Google doc.
You will find an editable copy of this document posted by your class teacher on Toddle
Product presentation
Additionally, you will be asked to present your disassembled product as an artifact
Note:
Because this unit does not follow the 'traditional' ABCD workflow, some of the assessment criteria will be done in different ways.
Others may be excluded. Remain calm; do not panic.
All work in design is subject to the UNIS AI policy
If you are unsure of what to do when using AI as a tool for your assessed work, please ask your teacher for clarification.
Ask HAL, our Design assistant powered by SchoolAI.
HAL can help you understand assessments, guide your inquiry & offer feedback.
Check Toddle for your assessment deadline and submission guidelines for this section.
Feedback and Criteria grades will be given by your class teacher for this EOL.
